The end of an era: parting ways with my project car

This photo was taken in March of this year. The car was supposed to be finished and on the road in May... of 2016. I finally told my friend/mechanic that I’d had enough. After four years of waiting (2 more than planned for) I can’t deal with waiting another year plus for the 911 to be finished. It pains me to do it, but I’m selling it to him for what I paid him for it and getting out of it. The plan is now to sell the S4 and use the money I got back from the 911 to buy something that I can drive year round and will put a smile on my face every day. Though I’m sad to part ways with the car that kept me up many nights these past years, I now have the funds to get into a caliber of vehicle far above the others I have previously owned.

My experience with similar builds leads me to budget 2x time and money and then you get close. If you are done with paint and bodywork (and from this pic you should be or close), you’re close to putting things back together and seeing real progress. If you’re done you’re done, but you might want to stick it out until you have have a working motor in the car. Then things seem way closer.

Sorry to hear you’re getting out of it, but not knowing details, I must assume this is for the best. If so I can sympathize, I’ve been thinking of moving on from my lifelong (figuratively speaking) and long stalled BMW 2002 project because I don’t see a time in life when I’ll get to do what I want with it. Hope all’s well.

You’re not wrong and I know that. I’m just kind of at the end of my rope with it. Body work isn’t even 100% done and apparently a whole bunch of wiring issues were just uncovered. I think it would be optimistic to say it would be on the road by next summer. It’s just more heart ache than it’s worth to me anymore .

Don’t want to put it out there until I’m 100% certain I can make it work. But I’m choosing between 2 cars at the moment, and leaning towards the one with the gated manual shifter.

Appreciate the kind words. It’s for the best in my case. I’m a young guy, I’ll have time to circle back and buy an old 911 again at some point.

Hey, you bet. Not sure what your definition of young is, but I’m late 30's with a 2002 I’ve had since I was 19 and there’s nothing for it right now, I’d honestly rather have the garage space to play music. An old 911 is a dream car to me though, maybe someday.

So maybe a Boxster? That’s the one I’d have ...

I was going to say a Cayman S.

My dad is staring down a 20k+ bill for the “re-paint” on his 71 Chevelle. You just never know until you peel the paint back and find either rust or old damage.

That’s what scares the crap out of me on the Cougar. It’s been repainted, it’s had prior bodywork. Until it’s stripped, you don’t know what’s there. I can budget a bit of money, I can’t budget $20k, nor is the car worth that to me.

I’ve driven a 1st gen Boxster so I have a soft spot ... nothing against the Cayman though, and I’d love to try one.

I’ve never driven a Porsche in any form, but I have been smitten by the idea of the mid rear engine and coupe looks of the Cayman. Then again I am a little odd, adding roofs and fastback hatches to Miatas and such.

And it doesn’t put a smile on your face daily? I loved my ‘12 S4. Sorry to hear about selling off your project car. That’s a lot of commitment for sure.

That was another factor. When they stripped it they fond some issues that could be bandaged and painted over without ill effect for now. But down the road...

I’m 22 and my garage is shared with two roommates. One day when I have my own space it will be a different story though.
